Louis de Broglie
Louis de Broglie
Brief History of His Life:
Louis de Broglie was born in Dieppe, France on
15th August, 1892
and died on
March 19, 1987
at 95 years old. He was a Professor of the Faculty of Sciences at Paris University, a member of the French Academy, and a Permanent Secretary of the Academy of Sciences. During his life he both
worked and lived in France studying general physics
Louis de Broglie studied at the Lycée Janson of Sailly. Before studying physics he got a degree in history, and then got a degree in science three years later. He was in the war from 1914-1918, and while stationed at the Eiffel Tower he studied technical problems as a way to keep in touch with his inner scientist :)
He then got his doctor’s degree in 1924 after delivering his thesis, Recherches sur la Théorie des Quanta, which was research on the quantum theory. This thesis contained important findings which he had obtained in a course of about two years.
Louis de Broglie's Atomic Theory:
His ideas were a basis for developing the
wave mechanics theory
. This theory has greatly improved our knowledge of the physical nature on the atomic scale. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics on his wave nature of electrons discovery in 1929.
Here is his vision of the Bohr model:
Application of His Idea:
He believed that electrons can act like both particles and waves, just like light. He also said that waves produced by electrons contained in the orbit around the nucleus, set up a standing wave of a certain energy, frequency, and wavelength.
He discovered that electrons can act like waves
which helped explain some of the things electrons do that we had never been able to explain before. Today,
quantum physics is applied in lasers, computers, and microscopes
